Built like a small fortress on a low rock above the sea, Pantokratoros has guarded the north-east coast of Athos since the 14th century, under the protection of the icon called the Gerontissa — the Eldress.
Founded: 14th century · Dedicated to: The Transfiguration of Christ

Pantokratoros stands on the north-east shore, between Stavronikita and the skete of Prophet Elijah. It was founded in the second half of the 14th century by two Byzantine brothers, high officials of the empire, and holds seventh place among the twenty ruling monasteries.
Its most venerated icon is the Panagia Gerontissa, 'the Eldress', associated with care for the old and the dying, and with miraculous provision in times of famine. Pilgrims come to it from across the Orthodox world.
Compact and heavily walled, with a strong tower, the monastery keeps a library of valuable manuscripts and lies within walking distance of the Prophet Elijah skete filmed in the series.
Pantokratoros is a cenobitic monastery, its life ordered around the great feast of the Transfiguration to which it is dedicated.
