Half a century of monastic life in the capital of Mount Athos — the testimony of a man who knows both the hardships and the joys of the path.
Testimony · Karyes, Mount Athos
In Karyes, the administrative capital of Mount Athos, Elder Prodromos has spent more than fifty years in monastic life. From the cells of the Athonite community he offers a testimony shaped by time and asceticism.
“If people in the world knew the joys of monastic life, everyone would become a monk — but if they also knew the hardships, everyone would make the choice,” he says of the road he chose.
His words often turn to the “Ladder” of Saint John Climacus, the classic text of Orthodox asceticism that describes spiritual ascent as a ladder. He also speaks of Saint Paisios the Athonite, whom he knew, and of the life of prayer that keeps Mount Athos alive.
